Artificial Sweeteners Once Again Linked to Weight Gain
February 27, 2008 on 6:32 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments
Foods and beverages that contain no-calorie artificial sweeteners may be ruining your ability to control your food intake and body weight, according to new research by psychologists at Purdue University’s Ingestive Behavior Research Center.
In their study, when compared with rats that ate yogurt sweetened with glucose (a simple sugar), rats that ate yogurt sweetened with the zero-calorie artificial sweetener saccharin:
It’s thought that consuming artificial sweeteners breaks the connection between a sweet sensation and a high-calorie food, thereby changing your body’s ability to regulate intake. The researchers also measured the rats’ core body temperatures, which typically rise after eating. However, after eating a sweet, high-calorie meal, rats that ate saccharin had a lower rise in body temperature than rats that ate glucose. The researchers believe that this blunted biological response led the rats to overeat, and made it harder to burn off the calories later. They concluded that consuming foods sweetened with saccharin would lead to greater weight gain and body fat than eating the same foods sweetened with sugar. Although further research needs to be done, the researchers believe that consuming other artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, and acesulfame K would have similar effects. Sources:

How is your New Year’s Resolution Going?
February 26, 2008 on 5:03 pm | In Uncategorized | No CommentsIf getting in shape was one of your New Year’s Resolutions, here are some words of inspiration for those who might need to get it back on track. Some of you are still holding on strong but some fell off and are finding it hard to jump back into your health and fitness goals.
For those who have stuck with it, something may have clicked after so many tries of wanting to make it happen. What is it that clicks inside? What gets us to that point of not letting anyone or anything get in the way of our success? Could it be the realization that the only one you hurt by not sticking to your plan for good health and fitness is your own body, mind and spirit? Time is passing us by!  You can either move forward by taking the steps to reach your goals or stay where you are and keep repeating the cycle.
For those who are finding it hard to stick with your resolution, ask yourself these questions. Why would you not want to feel healthy, strong and happy? Why would you not want to take care of the body you were blessed with?  It’s time to jump back on and use every available tool to help you reach your goals. We all have different goals, so finding the right tools is essential. Once you have them, use them and make your goals a reality!
There are many tools available to you at Club-KO.  A great way to get motivated again is by signing up for the 10 week program.  You can also sign up for some personal training sessions with me (Rosie) or any of our other Personal Trainers. If nothing else, take at least 3 classes a week.
Remember the reasons – whatever they are – why you want a fit and healthy body, and a happier state of mind. Then stop remembering and start sweating! Every day is a new day, every hour is a new hour, and every minute is a new minute
I’m sure you get the point. Make it a great day!
If that’s not enough, here some ways I thought might also help keep you on your path to Health, Fitness & Happiness:
- Take a picture of yourself as you are now. Put it up on where you can see it often, e.g. the fridge!
- Get another picture of yourself when you were the happiest with your weight. If you were never happy with your weight, get a picture of a body that you would like to work towards, or write down the amount of weight you want to lose. Put this next to the picture of you as you are now.
- Keep track of what you eat during the day.
- Make changes that will be lifelong changes for a healthier life. Eat more Fruits & Veggies!
- Find workouts that are fun for YOU! If you enjoy it you will stick with it.
- Keep track of your workouts, what you achieved and how you felt. Remember the pictures on the fridge!
- Change it up! Switching your workout patterns and nutrition help you stay focused and not get bored!
- Be patient! Â Give your body a chance to respond to your efforts and wait a couple of weeks to see the changes.
- Smile
It will breakdown any sadness you might be feeling inside. - Listen to music that will lift your spirit up and motivate you to move your body.
- Finally, like any relationship, put time and love into your goals you will see great results.

Don’t Put Your Coffee in Plastic Cups
February 25, 2008 on 4:38 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments
The amount of dangerous bisphenol A (BPA) that leaches from plastic bottles into the drinks they contain is most dependent on the liquid’s temperature, according to new research. When both new and used polycarbonate drinking bottles were exposed to boiling hot water, BPA was released 55 times more rapidly.
BPA an endocrine disruptor which mimics your body’s natural hormones. Hormones serve different functions throughout your body. BPA has been shown to affect reproduction and brain development.
The increased release of BPA continued even after the hot liquid was removed, meaning that even washing plastic cups or bottles in a hot dishwasher could lead to increased BPA content in cold drinks.
What a difference a couple weeks will make!
February 22, 2008 on 12:52 pm | In Uncategorized | 2 CommentsI teach classes everyday. Everyday I welcome new members and train our current members into peak ability and performance. One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to know our members. Seeing them come in, desiring a change and then making the commitment to themselves, inspires me and drives me to work harder to come up with new classes to motivate them in turn! However, the most fulfilling and inspiring part of my job is to witness the physical transformation that occurs to our members that can make the simple commitment of taking a couple of classes a week! CKO Kickboxing has changed my life and I in turn get to change the lives of our members! I will never get tired of that! If you haven’t tried a class yet, I’m ready to inspire to change your life! In a couple of weeks you’re going to see a change!

It all starts in how you think about yourself
February 21, 2008 on 7:36 am | In Uncategorized | No CommentsIt’s not about being rail-thin, or having a six pack, it’s about feeling healthy and being healthy. Exercising your heart and body so it can keep you going for another 20, 30 or more years. People say, they don’t have the motivation or they are looking for motivation. So, they look for a friend, or look for someone to give them that motivation, but that will only last so long. Because that energy was not from within and it was given to you by someone else, when that person is not there your motivation is gone and you are lost looking for it again. You can use that energy that is given to you as a kick start, but you must dig deep within yourself to get your own motivating energy, or else you won’t reach your goal to to loose weight or stay fit. You will fall of the fitness wagon and weeks will go by before you find that motivation again to get you back on. Stop and ask yourself: Do I want this? Why do I want this? Is this for me or to get outside approval? Once you ask yourself these 3 questions, then throw out all the garbage inside your head that keeps holding you back. Put yourself first in a positive state of mind, eating healthy and exercising all work together. It’s the recipe for our well-being. Remember, it’s about how you are feeling inside, and not the external world that you have to find peace with. We all have a negative voice that we listen to holding us back from what we want. But, it’s our choice on how long we want to listen to it. It’s like a bad radio station, and you have the choice to switch that station if you want to. One way is to take a walk and focus on your breathing, focus on how your body is feeling when you are walking and feeling the breeze. Take in the scenery around you, and then ask yourself some more questions How do I want to live my life? Am I in control of my life or am I handing the steering wheel to others? What steps do I need to take to live that life I dream of? (There are many ways to bring yourself in to awareness of your state of mind. For me it’s going to Club-KO and taking a class.) Then take it one day at a time, one step at a time. Don’t think about how much time it will take to get to your destination, only think about the steps you need to take. Also don’t beat yourself up if you have a bad day, you can always end it with a smile or begin a new day with a smile and start again. Until you make peace with who your are … you’ll never be content with what you have.
Doris Mortman Blessings to you all.

Surge In Gout Blamed On Sweet Drinks
February 20, 2008 on 8:34 pm | In Uncategorized | 1 Comment| Â |
Men who drink two or more sugary soft drinks a day have an 85 percent higher risk of gout than those who drink less than one a month, according to U.S. and Canadian researchers.
Gout has been increasing steadily in the UK in recent years, and the researchers believe it is linked to a rise in soft drink consumption over the same period. During the 12-year study, 46,000 men aged 40 and over were asked questions about their diet. The risk of developing gout significantly increased among men who drank five to six servings of sugary soft drinks a week. Fruit juice and fructose-rich fruits such as oranges and apples also increased the risk. Gout causes painful, swollen joints, usually in your lower limbs, caused when uric acid crystallizes out of your blood into your joints. Fructose is known to inhibit the excretion of uric acid, which may help to explain the study’s findings. |
One of the Most Ridiculous Studies on Diabetic Weight Loss Ever Published
February 12, 2008 on 6:38 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments
A truly ludicrous study purports to show that a weight-loss surgery called adjustable gastric banding works better than conventional medical treatment for Type 2 diabetes in the obese.
Type 2 diabetes is usually brought on by obesity, and patients can often rid themselves of the disease entirely by losing about 10 percent of their body weight.
Adjustable gastric banding consists of looping a band around the top of the stomach to cinch it into a small pouch. 25 to 30 percent of the more than 200,000 weight-loss operations performed in the United States last year used gastric banding.
Of course, weight-loss surgeries can result in black-outs, malnutrition, infection, bowel and gallbladder problems, and an increased risk of death, but these facts are largely missing from reporting on the study.
The study’s lead author, Dr. John Dixon, says he believes that, “[D]iabetes surgery will become common within the next few years.” The reasons for his position might become a little clearer when you realize that Dr. Dixon has received research grants and speakers’ fees from Allergan Health, the company that makes the gastric bands. The company also paid for the study in question.
